VulnerabilityCVE-2026-71319cvecve-2026-71319cwe-94cwe-306
Published: 08/05/2026 (08/05/2026, 21:26:59 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: nuxt
Product: devtools

Description

A critical code injection vulnerability (CWE-94) exists in Nuxt DevTools versions prior to 3.3.1. The devtools expose an unauthenticated bidirectional RPC channel over the Vite HMR WebSocket, allowing any client with network access to the HMR endpoint to invoke certain RPC methods without authentication. Specifically, the updateOptions() and openInEditor() methods lack proper authentication checks, enabling an attacker to set arbitrary commands and execute them on the developer's machine. This vulnerability is fixed in version 3.3.1.

Technical Analysis

Nuxt DevTools (development mode only) prior to version 3.3.1 exposes a bidirectional RPC channel over the Vite HMR WebSocket without authentication. The updateOptions(), clearOptions(), and openInEditor() RPC methods do not enforce the ensureDevAuthToken check. An attacker with network access to the Vite HMR endpoint can call updateOptions() to set the behavior.openInEditor value to an arbitrary command, then invoke openInEditor() to execute that command as a child process on the developer's machine. This constitutes an improper control of code generation (CWE-94) and improper authentication (CWE-306) vulnerability leading to remote code execution. The issue is resolved in Nuxt DevTools 3.3.1.

Potential Impact

An unauthenticated attacker who can reach the Vite HMR WebSocket endpoint can execute arbitrary code on the developer's machine running Nuxt DevTools in development mode. This can lead to full compromise of the developer environment, including confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts. The vulnerability is critical with a CVSS score of 9.6.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade Nuxt DevTools to version 3.3.1 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. Prior to upgrading, restrict network access to the Vite HMR WebSocket endpoint to trusted clients only, as the channel lacks authentication. Patch status is confirmed fixed in 3.3.1.
