Published: 10/09/2026 (10/09/2026, 10:17:18 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Apache Software Foundation
Product: Apache CXF

Description

The max_age authentication-freshness check in OidcClientCodeRequestFilter was inoperative due to a milliseconds/seconds unit mismatch and an inverted comparison polarity. Any relying party using setMaxAgeOffset to enforce re-authentication would silently accept sessions of any age, bypassing step-up authentication policies. Users are recommended to upgrade to versions 4.2.4 or 4.1.9 or 3.6.13, which fix this issue.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability involves an insufficient session expiration check (CWE-613) in Apache CXF's OidcClientCodeRequestFilter. Specifically, the max_age parameter intended to enforce re-authentication was ineffective because of a milliseconds/seconds unit mismatch and an inverted comparison polarity. As a result, relying parties that configured setMaxAgeOffset to require fresh authentication would silently accept stale sessions, bypassing intended security controls. The Apache Software Foundation has addressed this issue in versions 4.2.4, 4.1.9, and 3.6.13.

Potential Impact

Relying parties using the affected versions of Apache CXF with setMaxAgeOffset enabled could have their step-up authentication policies bypassed, allowing sessions to remain valid beyond their intended expiration. This could lead to unauthorized access if stale sessions are accepted without re-authentication.

Mitigation Recommendations

Users should upgrade to Apache CXF versions 4.2.4, 4.1.9, or 3.6.13, which contain the fix for this vulnerability. No other mitigation is indicated or required according to the vendor advisory.
