A patch is available and should be applied to update the Linux kernel to versions 5.15.0-1117.124~20.04.1 or later where the issue is fixed. The fix involves checking for changed data length in reused buffers and rejecting such records. Since the device is root-only by default, no additional mitigation is typically required beyond applying the official kernel update.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's s390 monwriter misc device allows a malicious user to cause memory corruption by reusing data buffers with different data lengths without proper validation. The flaw arises because the monwriter code does not check if the data length changes for subsequent records, leading to out-of-bounds user copy to the kernel buffer. The device is root-only by default, limiting practical impact. The issue has been fixed by adding checks to reject records with changed data length.
