A patch is available that fixes this issue by skipping the nlink decrement in cacheless mode. Users should apply the official Linux kernel updates that include this fix. The vendor advisory confirms that the issue has been resolved in updated kernel versions. No additional mitigation steps are required beyond applying the patch.

Description

A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's 9p filesystem client was resolved that caused a warning and potential race condition in cacheless mode. The issue arises because the client unconditionally calls drop_nlink() on regular files even when the inode's link count (nlink) is already zero, leading to a WARN_ON message. This occurs due to a race where the client refetches inode metadata from the server, which is authoritative in cacheless mode, causing inconsistent local nlink updates. The fix skips decrementing the link count in cacheless mode to avoid this race and warning.
