AI-suggested

A patch is available and should be applied to affected Linux kernel versions. The fix adds bounds checking to prevent out-of-bounds writes and rejects malformed NTFS images by marking the filesystem inconsistent. Users should update to patched kernel versions as per the vendor advisory. No additional mitigation is required as the vulnerability is fixed in the kernel.

Description

A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's NTFS3 driver allowed a controlled out-of-bounds write past a heap allocation due to improper bounds checking during promotion of a full resident $INDEX_ROOT to $INDEX_ALLOCATION. This flaw could be triggered by unprivileged users creating files on a crafted NTFS image, leading to adjacent heap corruption with attacker-controlled data. The issue has been resolved by adding validation to reject out-of-bounds copies and marking the filesystem as inconsistent on detection.
