AI-suggested
A patch is available and should be applied to affected Linux kernel versions to address this vulnerability. The fix involves validating attribute offsets to prevent underflow in data_size calculations. Systems running affected versions should update to patched kernel releases as provided by their Linux distribution vendors. No additional mitigations are specified or required beyond applying the official fix.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's NTFS3 filesystem driver (CVE-2026-72195) allows incorrect handling of resident attribute data size, potentially causing reads of up to 4 GiB beyond the intended memory area. This occurs due to an underflow in the calculation of data_size when certain on-disk attribute offsets are manipulated. The kernel includes partial defenses that cause mount failures on some code paths, but other code paths may read corrupted data_size values without re-validation. The issue has been fixed in affected Linux kernel versions.
