A patch is available that fixes this issue by preventing BRS from being enabled during event selector reprogramming when LBR users are active. Users should apply the official Linux kernel updates that include this fix. The affected Linux kernel versions listed should be updated to patched versions. No additional mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor advisory.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's perf subsystem on AMD processors was resolved. The issue involved enabling Branch Record Sampling (BRS) from the SVM reload path, which caused the kernel to attempt to set a deprecated hardware bit, resulting in a general protection fault (#GP). This occurred because BRS and Last Branch Record (LBR) are mutually exclusive, but the kernel incorrectly enabled BRS when LBR users were active. The flaw was fixed by preventing BRS from being enabled during event selector reprogramming even if LBR users were present.
