A patch is available and should be applied to affected Linux kernel versions to address the bounds checking issue in run_get_highest_vcn(). Users should update to the fixed kernel versions as provided by their distribution vendors. No additional mitigation is indicated by the vendor advisory.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's NTFS3 filesystem driver was resolved by adding a bounds check to the run_get_highest_vcn() function. This function previously parsed a packed NTFS mapping-pairs buffer without proper length bounds, relying only on a terminator byte. Crafted NTFS $LogFile UpdateMappingPairs records without a terminator could cause out-of-bounds reads, triggering a kernel slab-out-of-bounds read detected by KASAN during mount operations. The issue was fixed by introducing a run_buf_size parameter to reject run headers that extend beyond the buffer end, mirroring protections added to a similar function. Multiple Linux kernel versions are affected, and a patch is available.
