Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-72592 is an unrestricted file upload vulnerability in dulldusk/phpfm up to version 1.8.0. The vulnerability arises because the application ships with no authentication enabled by default (empty auth_pass) and an empty upload extension filter ($upload_ext_filter = array()), allowing unauthenticated attackers to upload files of any type, including PHP scripts. This enables remote code execution by browsing to the uploaded malicious PHP file.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows unauthenticated remote attackers to execute arbitrary PHP code on the server, leading to full compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected system. The CVSS 3.1 base score is 9.8, indicating critical severity with network attack vector, no privileges required, no user interaction, and high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, it is recommended to enable authentication and configure a restrictive upload extension filter to prevent uploading executable files. Avoid exposing the upload directory to direct web access or implement additional server-side validation and restrictions.
