Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Elastic
Product: Kibana

Description

Cross-Site Request Forgery (CWE-352) in Kibana can lead to privilege escalation via Cross Site Request Forgery (CAPEC-62). A user who is permitted to create visualizations can save a specially crafted Vega visualization that, when it is opened by another user, causes authenticated requests to be issued to Kibana in the context of the viewing user's session.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability (CVE-2026-72658) in Elastic Kibana is a Cross-Site Request Forgery (CWE-352) issue where a user permitted to create visualizations can craft a Vega visualization that, when opened by another user, causes authenticated requests to be issued under the viewing user's session. This can lead to privilege escalation by leveraging the victim's authenticated context. The vulnerability affects specific Kibana versions 8.19.0 and 9.0.0. No official patch or remediation level has been published yet, and there are no known exploits in the wild as of the publication date.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an attacker with visualization creation privileges to escalate privileges by causing authenticated requests to be made in the context of other users who open the malicious visualization. This can lead to unauthorized actions performed with the victim user's privileges, impacting confidentiality and integrity. Availability is not affected.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict visualization creation permissions to trusted users only and monitor for suspicious visualization content. Avoid opening untrusted Vega visualizations.
