Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Elastic
Product: Elasticsearch

Description

CVE-2026-72685 is a medium severity vulnerability in Elasticsearch versions 8.0.0 and 9.0.0. It allows a low-privileged authenticated user who can index documents to submit a crafted small document that causes a worker thread to be occupied for a disproportionate amount of time. This results in degraded availability of indexing operations on the affected node. The vulnerability relates to inefficient algorithmic complexity (CWE-407). No official patch or remediation guidance is currently available.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability in Elasticsearch (CVE-2026-72685) involves inefficient algorithmic complexity where processing a specially crafted small document submitted by a low-privileged authenticated user monopolizes a worker thread from a bounded pool. This leads to degraded availability of indexing operations on the affected node. The issue affects Elasticsearch versions 8.0.0 and 9.0.0. The CVSS v3.1 score is 4.3 (medium severity), indicating network attack vector, low attack complexity, low privileges required, no user interaction, unchanged scope, and impact limited to availability degradation. No known exploits are reported in the wild, and no vendor-provided patch or remediation level is currently documented.

Potential Impact

The impact is limited to availability degradation of indexing operations on the affected Elasticsearch node. There is no confidentiality or integrity impact. A low-privileged authenticated user capable of indexing documents can cause a denial of service condition by occupying worker threads disproportionately, potentially affecting service responsiveness.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, monitor indexing performance and limit indexing permissions to trusted users to reduce risk. No official remediation or temporary fix has been published by Elastic as of now.
