What to do

CISA required action

Apply mitigations in accordance with vendor instructions, ensuring compliance with CISA’s BOD 26-04 Prioritizing Security Updates Based on Risk (see URL in Notes) guidance and CISA’s “Forensics Triage Requirements” (see URL in Notes). Follow applicable BOD 26-04 guidance for cloud services or discontinue use of the product if mitigations are unavailable. Stakeholders are responsible for evaluating each asset's internet exposure and ensuring adherence to BOD 26-04 patching guidelines.

Public exploits and detection

Public tooling indexed from Metasploit Framework, Exploit-DB and ProjectDiscovery nuclei-templates. Its existence raises the odds of exploitation; it does not confirm attacks.

Description

Metabase has a critical SQL Injection vulnerability (CVE-2026-72898) that allows unauthenticated remote attackers to inject arbitrary SQL into the application database. Successful exploitation can grant attackers administrator access, enabling them to alter configurations, steal stored database credentials, access connected data, and export sensitive information. This vulnerability has a CVSS score of 10 and is known to be exploited in the wild.

Impact

An attacker exploiting this vulnerability can gain full administrator privileges on the Metabase instance, enabling them to change application configurations, steal credentials for connected databases, access all data accessible through those database connections, and export sensitive data. This compromises confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the Metabase environment and connected data sources.

Mitigation

Restrict network access to Metabase instances and monitor for suspicious activity. Given the criticality and active exploitation, prioritize applying vendor patches once released.
