Published: 09/14/2026 (09/14/2026, 13:23:47 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Apache Software Foundation
Product: Apache Syncope

Description

Improper Encoding or Escaping of Output vulnerability in Apache Syncope. Authenticated users can store a spreadsheet formula payload in one of their own plain attributes. When such users are included in a CSV export and the generated CSV file is opened by a spreadsheet application, the formula may be executed. This issue affects Apache Syncope: from 3.0.0-M0 through 3.0.16, from 4.0.0-M0 Through 4.0.7, from 4.1.0-M0 through 4.1.2. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 4.0.8 / 4.1.3, which fix this issue.

Technical Analysis

Apache Syncope suffers from an improper encoding or escaping of output vulnerability (CWE-116) identified as CVE-2026-73195. Authenticated users can inject spreadsheet formula payloads into their own plain attributes. When these users are included in CSV exports, the payload may execute when the CSV file is opened in spreadsheet software. This can lead to potential code execution or data manipulation via formula injection. The vulnerability affects Apache Syncope versions >=3.0.0-M0 <=3.0.16, >=4.0.0-M0 <=4.0.7, and >=4.1.0-M0 <=4.1.2. The issue is fixed in versions 4.0.8 and 4.1.3.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows authenticated users to inject spreadsheet formulas that execute when a CSV export is opened in spreadsheet applications. This can lead to high confidentiality and integrity impacts, as malicious formulas may execute arbitrary commands or manipulate data. Availability is not impacted. The CVSS score is 7.3 (High), reflecting network attack vector, low attack complexity, required privileges, and user interaction.

Mitigation Recommendations

Users should upgrade Apache Syncope to versions 4.0.8 or 4.1.3, where this vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor advisory.
