Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: openchoreo
Product: backstage-plugins

Description

CVE-2026-73666 is a high-severity vulnerability in OpenChoreo backstage-plugins where certain versions prior to 1.0.4, 1.1.4, and 1.2.1 have missing authentication for critical backend API functions. This flaw allows unauthenticated access to /api/* endpoints, enabling unauthorized catalog reads, scaffolder log reads, and catalog location modifications. The issue arises from hardcoded configuration flags that disable default authentication policies. Fixed versions have been released to address this problem.

Technical Analysis

OpenChoreo backstage-plugins versions before 1.0.4, 1.1.4, and 1.2.1 contain a missing authentication vulnerability (CWE-306) due to hardcoded backend.auth.dangerouslyDisableDefaultAuthPolicy and auth.providers.guest.dangerouslyAllowOutsideDevelopment set to true. This configuration exposes the /api/* endpoints without requiring authentication, allowing unauthenticated users to read catalog data, scaffolder logs, and create or delete catalog locations. The vulnerability is resolved in versions 1.0.4, 1.1.4, and 1.2.1.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows unauthenticated remote attackers to access sensitive backend API endpoints, resulting in unauthorized disclosure of catalog information and scaffolder logs, as well as unauthorized modification of catalog locations. The CVSS 3.1 score is 8.2 (High), reflecting network attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges required, no user interaction, high confidentiality impact, low integrity impact, and no availability impact.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade OpenChoreo backstage-plugins to version 1.0.4, 1.1.4, or 1.2.1 or later, where the authentication bypass issue is fixed. No other mitigation or temporary workaround is indicated. Patch status is confirmed by the version fixes stated in the advisory.
