Vendor/Project: Apache Software Foundation
Product: Apache bRPC

Description

CVE-2026-74758 is a heap use-after-free vulnerability in the RTMP protocol component of Apache bRPC versions prior to 1.18.0. It allows a remote attacker to crash a bRPC RTMP server by sending a specially crafted Abort control message without requiring authentication. The issue arises because the server deletes a chunk stream object while it is still being accessed, leading to use-after-free conditions.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability in Apache bRPC occurs when an RTMP Abort control message targets the chunk stream currently being parsed. The function RtmpChunkStream::OnAbortMessage calls RtmpContext::ClearChunkStream, which deletes the chunk stream object while its Feed() method is still executing. After the handler returns, Feed() continues to access the deleted object, causing a heap use-after-free. This can be triggered remotely without authentication by sending a crafted Abort message to a bRPC server with RTMP support enabled.

Potential Impact

A remote attacker can cause a denial of service by crashing the bRPC RTMP server. No authentication or application-level request is needed, making the attack feasible from untrusted networks if RTMP support is enabled.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade Apache bRPC to version 1.18.0 or later, which includes a fix that prevents clearing the chunk stream when the Abort message targets the chunk stream currently being parsed. Applying the patch from https://github.com/apache/brpc/pull/3452 also addresses the issue. No other mitigations are specified.
