CVE-2026-76182: CWE-74 in Eclipse Foundation Eclipse Jetty
Description
In Eclipse Jetty, `TryPathsHandler` and `TryFilesFilter` can be configured to forward requests to template URIs such as `index?p=$path`, where `$path` is the request path in context. However, URI paths may contain characters that are reserved in URI queries so that a path of `/s&a=1` when applied to the template becomes `index?p=/s&a=1`, which is interpreted as 2 query parameters: `p=/s` and `a=1`, rather than just one query parameter `p` whose value is `/s&a=1`.

Technical Analysis
In Eclipse Jetty, the TryPathsHandler and TryFilesFilter components can be configured to forward requests to template URIs such as 'index?p=$path', where '$path' is the request path. If the path contains characters reserved in URI queries (e.g., '&'), the resulting URI may be interpreted as multiple query parameters rather than a single parameter with the intended value. For example, a path '/s&a=1' becomes 'index?p=/s&a=1', which is parsed as two parameters: 'p=/s' and 'a=1' instead of one parameter 'p' with value '/s&a=1'. This behavior corresponds to CWE-74 (Improper Neutralization of Special Elements in Output Used by a Downstream Component).
Potential Impact
The vulnerability can cause incorrect interpretation of query parameters when forwarding requests, potentially leading to unexpected application behavior. The CVSS 4.0 score is 6.9 (medium severity), indicating a network exploitable issue with low complexity and no privileges or user interaction required. There is no indication of known exploits in the wild.
Mitigation Recommendations
No official patch or remediation details are provided in the available data. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, users should carefully validate and encode URI paths when configuring TryPathsHandler and TryFilesFilter to prevent unintended query parameter parsing.
