Technical Analysis

In Splunk Enterprise versions >=10.4 and <10.4.2, the Edge Processor REST API endpoint does not enforce authentication, allowing unauthenticated users to access sensitive pipeline configuration data. The vulnerability arises from missing authentication controls on the Edge Processor service endpoint. This issue is specific to versions starting from 10.4 and is resolved in 10.4.2 and later.

Potential Impact

An unauthenticated attacker can retrieve sensitive configuration information related to the Edge Processor pipelines. This could lead to information disclosure that may aid further attacks or reconnaissance. The vulnerability does not allow modification or denial of service, but the confidentiality impact is high.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade Splunk Enterprise to version 10.4.2 or later where this vulnerability is fixed. Since the vulnerability is due to missing authentication on the Edge Processor REST API endpoint, applying the official fix is the recommended remediation. No other mitigations are indicated.
