Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-76880 is a high-severity vulnerability classified as CWE-787 (Out-of-bounds Write) affecting the Wireshark network protocol analyzer. Specifically, the RRC protocol dissector in Wireshark versions 4.6.0 through 4.6.7 and 4.4.0 through 4.4.18 contains a flaw that allows crafted input to cause a crash, leading to denial of service. The vulnerability does not impact confidentiality or integrity but affects availability by crashing the application. No official patch or remediation level has been provided in the available data, and no known exploits are reported in the wild.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation causes a denial of service by crashing Wireshark when processing maliciously crafted RRC protocol data. There is no indication of confidentiality or integrity compromise. The impact is limited to availability disruption of the affected Wireshark instances.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is released, users should avoid processing untrusted RRC protocol data with affected versions of Wireshark. Monitor the Wireshark Foundation's advisories for updates and apply patches promptly once available.
