Technical Analysis

The Helix Ultimate extension for Joomla versions 1.0 to 2.2.9 has an improper access control vulnerability (CWE-284) in its MegaMenu settings. Specifically, the AJAX endpoint save-megamenu-settings fails to enforce required permissions (core.edit on com_menus.item.{id} or core.admin). This flaw enables authenticated users to submit modified layout parameters for any menu item without proper authorization checks, potentially altering menu configurations beyond their privileges.

Potential Impact

An authenticated user with some level of access can modify layout parameters of arbitrary menu items without proper authorization. This could lead to unauthorized changes in the website's menu structure or presentation, potentially affecting site navigation or user experience. The vulnerability does not require user interaction and has a medium severity rating with a CVSS 4.0 score of 5.1.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. No official fix or patch information is provided in the available data. Until a fix is available, restrict access to users who require menu editing privileges and monitor for unusual menu configuration changes.
