AI-suggested
A patch is available and should be applied to affected Linux kernel versions to mitigate this vulnerability. The fix hardens the pidfile open operation by using O_NOFOLLOW and validating the file before locking and writing, preventing symlink-based attacks. Users should update to the fixed kernel versions as provided by their vendor. No additional mitigation is required if the patch is applied.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's intel-speed-select daemon allows a local unprivileged user to create a symlink at a fixed pidfile path under /tmp. This can cause a root-run daemon to write to an attacker-chosen file, potentially leading to integrity issues. The flaw is addressed by hardening the pidfile open operation using O_NOFOLLOW and validating the file before locking and writing. Multiple specific Linux kernel versions are affected. A patch is available to fix this issue.
