An official patch is available and should be applied to affected linux-aws kernel versions. The vendor advisory from Ubuntu confirms the availability of fixes. No additional mitigation steps are indicated beyond applying the update.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's perf tools was resolved that involved improper validation of CPU indices in machine__resolve(). This flaw allowed crafted perf.data files with large CPU indices to cause out-of-bounds heap reads. The issue was fixed by using a safer accessor function that validates both null pointers and bounds, preventing invalid CPU topology access. Multiple linux-aws kernel versions 4.4.0-1002.2 through 4.4.0-1031.34 are affected. A high-severity CVSS 3.1 score of 9.1 reflects the potential for information disclosure and denial of service. An official patch is available from the vendor.
