Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-8071 is a CWE-79 Cross-Site Scripting vulnerability in the Anti-Spam by CleanTalk WordPress plugin prior to version 6.79. The vulnerability arises because the plugin does not properly sanitize content inside a custom shortcode used for email encoding. This allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts into comments that have been approved. When these comments are viewed by users or administrators, the injected scripts execute, potentially leading to unauthorized actions or data exposure within the WordPress environment.

Potential Impact

An attacker can inject and execute arbitrary web scripts in the context of the affected site by exploiting the vulnerability in the email-encoding shortcode. This can lead to session hijacking, defacement, or other malicious actions performed with the privileges of the user viewing the comment, including administrators. The vulnerability affects the integrity and confidentiality of the site and its users.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official fix or patch is currently confirmed for this vulnerability. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, administrators should consider disabling the email-encoding shortcode feature or applying other temporary mitigations recommended by the vendor once available.
