Published: 09/07/2026 (09/07/2026, 22:33:29 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: ash-project
Product: ash_double_entry

Description

CVE-2026-81638 is a low severity vulnerability in ash-project's ash_double_entry component where improper handling of alternate encoding allows multiple distinct string representations of the same identifier. This can cause desynchronization or bypass of string-level checks such as idempotency, deduplication, deny-lists, audit correlation, or signature verification when IDs are exposed over HTTP or API boundaries. The issue affects versions from 0.1.0 up to but not including 1.0.19.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability arises because AshDoubleEntry.ULID encodes a 128-bit ULID as 26 Crockford base-32 characters, but the first character only encodes 3 bits, limiting canonical values to 0-7. However, the decode function masks the first character to its low 3 bits while the validation function accepts all 32 characters in that position. Consequently, different strings such as those starting with 0, 8, G, or R decode to the same 16-byte value and thus refer to the same record. This discrepancy allows an attacker to submit differently spelled IDs that resolve to the same underlying record, potentially bypassing string-level protections like idempotency checks or deny-lists.

Potential Impact

An attacker can exploit this encoding inconsistency to submit multiple distinct string forms of the same identifier, potentially bypassing protections that rely on string equality such as idempotency enforcement, deduplication, deny-lists, audit correlation, or signature verification. This could lead to logic errors or unintended behavior in applications using ash_double_entry where IDs are exposed externally. The CVSS score of 2.1 reflects a low impact with local attack vector and partial impact on integrity.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or remediation level is currently provided. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, users should be cautious when relying on string equality of ULID identifiers from ash_double_entry and consider additional normalization or validation to prevent bypasses caused by alternate encodings.
