0
High
Published: 08/29/2026 (08/29/2026, 17:17:00 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: sudo-project
Product: sudo

Description

Sudo through 1.9.17p2 fails to apply intercept policy checks to the execveat system call in ptrace-based intercept mode. Users permitted to run specific commands can execute denied programs by calling execveat directly or through fexecve, bypassing policy enforcement and logging.

Technical Analysis

The sudo utility through version 1.9.17p2 fails to enforce intercept policy checks on the execveat system call when operating in ptrace-based intercept mode. As a result, users who have permission to run certain commands can circumvent sudo's policy restrictions and logging mechanisms by invoking denied programs directly through execveat or indirectly through fexecve. This represents a protection mechanism failure that undermines sudo's intended access controls.

Potential Impact

Users with limited sudo permissions can execute unauthorized commands without triggering policy enforcement or logging, potentially leading to privilege escalation or unauthorized actions on the system. This bypass compromises the integrity of sudo's access control and auditing mechanisms.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, consider restricting use of ptrace-based intercept mode or limiting sudo permissions to trusted users only.
