Published: 09/07/2026 (09/07/2026, 22:34:14 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: ash-project
Product: ash_lua

Description

CVE-2026-82586 is a high-severity vulnerability in ash-project's ash_lua component that allows Lua scripts to bypass field exposure restrictions and read sensitive attributes not intended to be accessible. The flaw arises because the read operation resolves field names without consulting the allow-list, enabling access to private fields such as hashed passwords. This affects versions 0.1.0 up to but not including 0.2.1.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in ash_lua involves improper protection of alternate paths (CWE-424) where the read action's operation aggregate path uses the field name directly from the Lua call and resolves it using String.to_existing_atom and Ash.Query.Aggregate.new! without enforcing the exposed-field allow-list. Consequently, a Lua script can read any attribute of any record accessible to the actor, including private sensitive fields like hashed_password. This issue affects ash_lua versions from 0.1.0 before 0.2.1.

Potential Impact

An attacker able to submit or influence Lua scripts can read sensitive attributes that should be restricted, including private fields such as hashed passwords. This unauthorized data access can lead to exposure of confidential information, potentially compromising user credentials or other sensitive data stored in the affected system.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is released, restrict the ability to submit or influence Lua scripts to trusted users only to mitigate exploitation risk.
