Published: 10/21/2026 (10/21/2026, 12:10:07 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Apache Software Foundation
Product: Apache bRPC

Description

A NULL pointer dereference vulnerability exists in Apache bRPC's RTMP protocol implementation prior to version 1.18.0. This flaw allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service by crashing the server when a crafted createStream command is sent and the client closes the connection prematurely. The issue arises when the server rejects a createStream request, returns a null stream, and then attempts to access a member of the null pointer during error handling.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-82953 is a NULL pointer dereference vulnerability in Apache bRPC versions before 1.18.0 affecting the RTMP protocol implementation. When the RTMP service rejects a createStream request by returning a null stream, the server sends an error response. If the client closes the connection before this response is written, the error-handling code dereferences the null stream pointer, specifically accessing stream->_onfail_id, causing the server process to crash. This results in a denial of service condition. The vulnerability can be triggered remotely by an attacker sending a crafted createStream command and then closing the connection immediately.

Potential Impact

Remote attackers can cause a denial of service by crashing the Apache bRPC server running the vulnerable RTMP service. This disrupts service availability but does not indicate code execution or data compromise based on the provided information.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available by upgrading Apache bRPC to version 1.18.0, which addresses this vulnerability. Alternatively, applying the patch available at https://github.com/apache/brpc/pull/3508 also mitigates the issue. Users should apply one of these remediation options to prevent denial of service attacks exploiting this NULL pointer dereference.
