AI-suggested

A fix is available that validates the pin argument in all relevant GPIO syscall handlers against the controller's supported pins and checks the pin range unconditionally. Users should upgrade to a fixed version beyond 4.4.2 or apply the vendor's patch once available. Until then, restricting user-mode access to GPIO device objects can reduce exposure.

Description

CVE-2026-82961 is a vulnerability in the Zephyr project's GPIO syscall handlers where user-mode callers could supply an unvalidated pin argument. This lack of validation allows out-of-bounds memory access in kernel space, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution or system crashes. The flaw affects Zephyr versions from 2.2.0 through 4.4.2 and requires user-mode access to a GPIO device object. The vulnerability is mitigated by validating the pin argument against the controller's supported pins and range checks.
