Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-84250 describes a vulnerability in IBM Guardium Data Protection 12.2 where weak cryptographic protection combined with a hard-coded recovery key in the pkcrypto passkey component enables a local attacker to recover the root password. Exploitation of this flaw results in root privilege escalation. The vulnerability is classified under CWE-798 (Use of Hard-coded Credentials) and has a CVSS v3.1 base score of 8.4, indicating high severity.

Potential Impact

A local attacker with access to the affected system can exploit the hard-coded recovery key and weak cryptographic protections to recover the root password. This leads to full root privilege escalation, allowing complete control over the affected system.

Mitigation Recommendations

No patch or official remediation information is provided in the available data. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict local access to trusted users only and monitor for suspicious activity related to privilege escalation attempts.
