Product: libheif

Description

CVE-2026-84449 is an integer overflow vulnerability in the libheif library prior to version 1.19.6. The flaw occurs in the convert_colorspace() function when handling extremely large RGB images, causing an integer overflow in the image-plane stride calculation. This overflow leads to reading beyond allocated memory during RGB-to-YCbCr conversion, potentially crashing the encoding process. The issue is fixed in libheif version 1.19.6.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in libheif (CVE-2026-84449) involves an integer overflow in the Op_RGB24_32_to_YCbCr::convert_colorspace() function. When extremely large RGB images are created via heif_image_create() and heif_image_add_plane(), the stride calculation uses an integer width that can overflow. This overflow causes the conversion loop in rgb2yuv.cc to compute an invalid input pointer, resulting in out-of-bounds reads during heif_context_encode_image()'s RGB-to-YCbCr conversion. This can cause the encoding process to crash. The issue is resolved in version 1.19.6.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability can cause a denial of service by crashing the encoding process when processing specially crafted large RGB images. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity reported. The CVSS score is 3.7 (low severity), reflecting the limited impact and the requirement for a high attack complexity.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade libheif to version 1.19.6 or later, where this integer overflow issue has been fixed. No other mitigations are specified or required.
