VulnerabilityCVE-2026-8470cvecve-2026-8470cwe-327
Published: 08/05/2026 (08/05/2026, 18:11:52 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: IBM
Product: Langflow OSS

Description

IBM Langflow OSS versions 1.0.0 through 1.10.3 use Python's non-cryptographic random module to generate Fernet encryption keys from user secrets shorter than 32 characters. This approach relies on the deterministic Mersenne Twister PRNG, which produces identical keys for identical seeds. As a result, attackers can reproduce encryption keys and decrypt stored API keys and authentication tokens. This vulnerability is classified as CWE-327, indicating the use of a broken or risky cryptographic algorithm.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-8470 affects IBM Langflow OSS versions 1.0.0 through 1.10.3, where the software uses Python's non-cryptographic random module to generate Fernet encryption keys from user secrets under 32 characters. The deterministic nature of the Mersenne Twister PRNG means that identical seeds produce identical keys, allowing attackers to reproduce encryption keys and decrypt sensitive stored data such as API keys and authentication tokens. This cryptographic weakness is categorized under CWE-327 (Use of a Broken or Risky Cryptographic Algorithm).

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows attackers to reproduce encryption keys generated from user secrets under 32 characters, enabling decryption of stored API keys and authentication tokens. This compromises the confidentiality and integrity of sensitive authentication data, potentially leading to unauthorized access and privilege escalation within affected systems.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, avoid using user secrets under 32 characters for key generation and consider implementing stronger cryptographic key generation methods that do not rely on deterministic PRNGs like the Mersenne Twister.
