CVE-2026-85231: Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling in Red Hat Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10
Description
A flaw was found in libtirpc. An authenticated remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending oversized wrapped data requests to an RPC (Remote Procedure Call) service configured with RPCSEC_GSS (Remote Procedure Call Security-Generic Security Service) integrity or privacy. This can lead to unbounded memory allocation, resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS) by exhausting system resources and causing the service to become unstable or terminate.

Technical Analysis
This vulnerability in libtirpc allows an authenticated remote attacker to exploit an RPC service using RPCSEC_GSS by sending oversized wrapped data requests. The flaw causes unbounded memory allocation, which can exhaust system resources and result in denial of service by making the service unstable or causing it to terminate. The issue affects Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. The CVSS 3.1 score is 6.5, indicating medium severity. No explicit patch or remediation details are provided in the vendor advisory linked.
Potential Impact
The impact is a denial of service condition caused by resource exhaustion due to unbounded memory allocation when processing oversized wrapped data requests on RPC services configured with RPCSEC_GSS. This can cause the affected service to become unstable or terminate, potentially disrupting availability of services relying on RPC.
Mitigation Recommendations
Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-85231 for current remediation guidance. Until a patch is applied, consider restricting access to RPC services requiring RPCSEC_GSS to trusted authenticated users only to reduce exposure.
