Published: 09/03/2026 (09/03/2026, 22:38:28 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: themoos
Product: essential-moos

Description

MOOS essential-moos through 10.0.1 contains a buffer overflow vulnerability in CMOOSUDPLink::ReadPktFromArray() that allows remote attackers to corrupt heap memory by sending UDP datagrams with negative declared lengths. Attackers can send crafted UDP packets to the configured UDPListen port to trigger an oversized memcpy operation that writes past the destination buffer, causing heap corruption and denial of service.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability CVE-2026-85436 affects themoos essential-moos versions up to 10.0.1. It is a buffer overflow in the CMOOSUDPLink::ReadPktFromArray() function, triggered by UDP datagrams that declare negative lengths. This leads to an oversized memcpy operation that writes beyond the destination buffer, corrupting heap memory and causing denial of service. The flaw can be exploited remotely without authentication or user interaction, and no known exploits are reported in the wild. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 8.7, indicating high severity.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation results in heap memory corruption and denial of service on the affected system. The vulnerability can be triggered remotely by unauthenticated attackers sending malicious UDP packets, potentially disrupting service availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. No official fix or workaround information is provided at this time. Users should monitor the vendor's communications for updates and apply patches once available.
