Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-85499 describes an improper authorization vulnerability in Apache SkyWalking BanyanDB. Specifically, the Canopy component includes incomplete proof-of-concept role and monitoring-proxy functionality. When configured with a readonly Canopy user and a reachable monitoring target, the readonly user can send non-read requests through the monitoring proxy, violating authorization constraints. This affects versions from 0.11.0 before 0.11.1. The vendor has released version 0.11.1 to address this issue.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows a readonly user, under certain non-default configurations, to perform unauthorized non-read operations via the monitoring proxy. This could lead to unauthorized actions beyond intended read-only access, potentially impacting system integrity or confidentiality depending on the nature of the non-read requests.

Mitigation Recommendations

Users should upgrade Apache SkyWalking BanyanDB to version 0.11.1 or later, which contains the official fix for this improper authorization vulnerability.
