CVE-2026-85583: Improper Link Resolution Before File Access ('Link Following') in siyuan-note siyuan
Description
SiYuan versions before v3.8.2 contain a path traversal vulnerability in the reader-accessible file-read endpoint that follows symlinks when opening authorized asset paths. Attackers with reader role can request a logical asset under data/assets/ that is a symlink to a file outside the workspace and receive the target file bytes, bypassing workspace boundary restrictions.

Technical Analysis
CVE-2026-85583 describes an improper link resolution vulnerability in SiYuan note-taking software prior to version 3.8.2. The reader-accessible file-read endpoint follows symbolic links when opening authorized asset paths under data/assets/. Attackers with reader privileges can request assets that are symbolic links pointing outside the workspace, resulting in unauthorized file disclosure. This path traversal issue violates workspace boundary protections by resolving symlinks improperly before file access.
Potential Impact
An attacker with reader role privileges can read arbitrary files outside the workspace by exploiting symbolic links. This leads to unauthorized disclosure of potentially sensitive files on the host system. The vulnerability does not require user interaction and has a network attack vector with low complexity, making it a high-severity information disclosure risk.
Mitigation Recommendations
A fixed version 3.8.2 or later is available that addresses this vulnerability. Users should upgrade to SiYuan version 3.8.2 or newer to mitigate this path traversal issue. No additional mitigations are specified.
