Technical Analysis
Progress MarkLogic Server versions 11.x prior to 11.3.7 and 12.x prior to 12.1.0 contain an improper privilege management vulnerability (CWE-269). A remote attacker who has query-execution access can invoke an XQuery evaluation function without possessing the additional evaluation privilege. This bypass enables execution of server-side code with elevated permissions, potentially compromising the system. The vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 base score of 9.9, indicating critical severity with network attack vector, low attack complexity, and no user interaction required.
Potential Impact
Successful exploitation allows remote attackers with query-execution access to execute arbitrary code on the server with elevated privileges. This can lead to full compromise of the affected MarkLogic Server, impacting confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data and services.
Mitigation Recommendations
A fix is available in MarkLogic Server versions 11.3.7 and 12.1.0 and later. Users should upgrade to these versions to remediate the vulnerability. Since this is not a cloud service, patching the affected software is required to mitigate the risk.
