CVE-2026-85977: Excessive Platform Resource Consumption within a Loop in Red Hat Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10
Description
CVE-2026-85977 is a medium severity vulnerability in libtirpc used by Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. A remote attacker can cause excessive memory and CPU consumption by sending specially crafted PMAPPROC_DUMP replies to a client using the pmap_getmaps() function. This leads to a denial of service (DoS) due to resource exhaustion of the client process.

Technical Analysis
This vulnerability exists in libtirpc within Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. It involves unbounded decoding of PMAPPROC_DUMP replies sent to a client application that uses the pmap_getmaps() function. An attacker controlling the host sending these replies can trigger excessive platform resource consumption, causing the client process to exhaust memory and CPU resources and become unavailable.
Potential Impact
The impact is a denial of service condition on the client process due to excessive memory and CPU usage. There is no confidentiality or integrity impact reported. The CVSS score is 5.3 (medium severity), reflecting a network attack vector with high attack complexity and requiring user interaction.
Mitigation Recommendations
Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-85977 for current remediation guidance. No official fix or workaround is stated in the provided data.
