VulnerabilityCVE-2026-8616cvecve-2026-8616cwe-862
Published: 07/17/2026 (07/17/2026, 02:31:30 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: devozon
Product: Fense Proxy & VPN Blocker

Description

The Fense Proxy & VPN Blocker plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to unauthorized modification of data due to a missing capability check and missing nonce validation on the fense_bpvt_save_settings() function in versions up to, and including, 3.0.1. The callback is registered to both wp_ajax_* and wp_ajax_nopriv_* hooks and unconditionally calls delete_option() on four plugin options and delete_transient() on three transients tied to the plugin's API key cache and settings. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to delete plugin options and transients, effectively resetting the plugin's API key/data cache and forcing the plugin to refetch state.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-8616 is a missing authorization vulnerability (CWE-862) in the Fense Proxy & VPN Blocker plugin for WordPress, affecting versions up to and including 3.0.1. The vulnerability exists because the fense_bpvt_save_settings() function lacks proper capability checks and nonce validation, yet is registered to both wp_ajax_* and wp_ajax_nopriv_* hooks. This allows unauthenticated attackers to delete four plugin options and three transients related to the plugin's API key cache and settings by calling delete_option() and delete_transient() functions. The impact is a forced reset of the plugin's API key and data cache, potentially disrupting plugin functionality.

Potential Impact

An unauthenticated attacker can delete critical plugin options and cached data, causing the plugin to reset its API key and data cache. While this does not lead to confidentiality loss or availability disruption, it results in unauthorized modification of plugin state and may affect the plugin's operation until the data is refetched.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict access to the affected AJAX endpoints if possible, and monitor for unusual requests targeting the fense_bpvt_save_settings() function. Avoid using the plugin version 3.0.1 or earlier in sensitive environments.
