Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: axolotl-ai-cloud
Product: axolotl

Description

Axolotl before 0.19.0 contains a remote code execution vulnerability in the multipack patch path where trust_remote_code defaults to None instead of False, causing the security guard to be bypassed. Attackers can execute arbitrary Python code by crafting a malicious Hugging Face model repository selected as base_model, which is loaded with hardcoded trust_remote_code=True during AutoModelForCausalLM.from_pretrained.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-86169 affects axolotl versions prior to 0.19.0. The vulnerability arises because the trust_remote_code parameter defaults to None instead of False in the multipack patch path, which causes the security guard to be bypassed. When loading a model with AutoModelForCausalLM.from_pretrained, the code hardcodes trust_remote_code=True, enabling attackers to execute arbitrary Python code by crafting a malicious Hugging Face model repository selected as base_model.

Potential Impact

An attacker can achieve remote code execution on systems running vulnerable versions of axolotl by supplying a malicious model repository. This can lead to full compromise of the affected system without requiring privileges or user interaction beyond model loading.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in axolotl version 0.19.0 and later. Users should upgrade to version 0.19.0 or newer to remediate this vulnerability. No additional mitigations are specified.
