Published: 09/09/2026 (09/09/2026, 13:32:12 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: grokability
Product: snipe-it

Description

Snipe-IT versions before 8.7.0 wipe the database before validating the uploaded backup archive in the restore endpoint. Superusers uploading corrupted or invalid zip files trigger permanent data loss with no recovery path or rollback mechanism.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability in Snipe-IT affects versions prior to 8.7.0. When a superuser uses the restore endpoint to upload a backup archive, the system wipes the existing database before validating the archive. If the uploaded zip file is corrupted or invalid, this leads to irreversible data loss since there is no rollback or recovery path implemented. The CVSS 4.0 score is 6.9 (medium severity), reflecting network attack vector, low attack complexity, high privileges required, user interaction needed, and high impact on integrity and availability.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation results in permanent loss of the database contents due to improper cleanup on thrown exceptions during the restore process. This affects data integrity and availability, with no recovery or rollback options, potentially causing significant operational disruption.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, avoid using the restore endpoint with untrusted or unverified backup archives. Limit superuser access to trusted personnel only to reduce risk.
