Technical Analysis

This vulnerability affects Oracle VM VirtualBox 7.2.16 running on Windows hosts. A low privileged attacker who can log on to the host system can exploit this flaw to compromise Oracle VM VirtualBox, leading to complete control over the virtualization environment. The CVSS 3.1 vector indicates that the attack requires local access with low complexity and no user interaction, and results in high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an attacker with low privileges on the Windows host to take over Oracle VM VirtualBox, potentially compromising the virtualized environments and the host system's virtualization management. This can lead to unauthorized access, data compromise, and disruption of virtualization services.

Mitigation Recommendations

Oracle has released security patches as part of its September 2026 Critical Security Patch Update. Users of Oracle VM VirtualBox version 7.2.16 on Windows hosts are strongly advised to apply the available patches promptly to remediate this vulnerability.
