Technical Analysis

This vulnerability involves a stack-based buffer overflow in the sub_3B4610 function of Investintech SlimPDFReader up to version 2.0.13. The overflow can be triggered remotely, potentially allowing an attacker to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service. The vendor has discontinued the product and has not issued any patches or mitigations. Public exploit code exists, but no official remediation is available due to the product's end-of-life status.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could lead to remote code execution or application crashes due to the stack-based buffer overflow. Given the medium CVSS score and the presence of public exploit code, affected systems remain at risk if still in use. However, since the product is discontinued, no vendor-supported fixes or updates are available to mitigate this risk.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or fix is available because the product is discontinued and unsupported. Users should discontinue use of Investintech SlimPDFReader and migrate to alternative PDF reader software that is actively maintained and supported. Avoid opening untrusted PDF files with this software to reduce exposure.
