Published: 09/10/2026 (09/10/2026, 18:04:01 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: MongoDB
Product: Java Driver

Description

Improper neutralization of special elements in data query logic in the GridFS component of the MongoDB Java Driver can cause a caller-supplied structured file identifier to be interpreted as a query condition rather than as a literal identifier. An authenticated user who can influence the identifier passed by an affected application may obtain stored file content beyond the intended target or cause all GridFS file chunks in the affected bucket to be removed, rendering stored file content unreadable. The affected rename operation may also rename a stored file other than the intended target.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability (CWE-943) in MongoDB Java Driver's GridFS component arises from improper neutralization of special elements in data query logic. Specifically, a structured file identifier supplied by a caller is interpreted as a query condition instead of a literal identifier. An authenticated user who can control the identifier passed to the affected application may exploit this to read unauthorized stored file content, remove all GridFS file chunks in the bucket, or rename files other than the intended target. The issue affects versions >=3.3.0 and <5.11.1 of the MongoDB Java Driver.

Potential Impact

An authenticated user with the ability to influence the file identifier can access stored file content beyond the intended target, delete all file chunks in the affected GridFS bucket making stored content unreadable, or cause unintended file renaming. This can lead to unauthorized data disclosure, data loss, and potential disruption of application functionality relying on GridFS stored files.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict authenticated user privileges to prevent manipulation of file identifiers passed to GridFS operations. Monitor for unusual file access or deletion patterns related to GridFS usage.
