Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-88753 identifies a ReDoS vulnerability in the extract_metadata() function located in lib/markdown2.py of the trentm markdown2 library up to version 2.5.5. The vulnerability arises from the use of regular expressions that can be exploited by an attacker to cause excessive CPU consumption, resulting in a denial of service condition when processing malicious Markdown input.

Potential Impact

An attacker can cause a denial of service by submitting a crafted Markdown document that triggers the vulnerable regular expression processing in the extract_metadata() function. This leads to resource exhaustion and service unavailability for legitimate users.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, consider limiting or sanitizing Markdown input from untrusted sources to reduce exposure to this vulnerability.
