Published: 10/13/2026 (10/13/2026, 16:58:04 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Red Hat
Product: Red Hat Hardened Images

Description

A flaw was found in BusyBox's httpd web server. When configured with system password authentication, a user existence oracle may exist in certain build configurations. An attacker could distinguish existing from non-existing usernames by observing authentication failure behavior. Impact is limited to username enumeration and requires non-default compile options or uncommon password file states; default BusyBox builds with shadow password support are not affected.

Technical Analysis

A flaw in BusyBox's httpd web server can lead to a user existence oracle when system password authentication is enabled under certain build configurations. This allows an attacker to distinguish existing usernames from non-existing ones by analyzing authentication failure responses. The vulnerability is limited to username enumeration and requires specific non-default compile-time options or unusual password file states. Default BusyBox builds with shadow password support are not vulnerable.

Potential Impact

The impact is limited to information disclosure through username enumeration. There is no confidentiality, integrity, or availability impact beyond this. Exploitation requires specific build configurations and password file states that are not common in default deployments.

Mitigation Recommendations

No explicit patch or remediation status is provided in the vendor advisory. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-88834 for current remediation guidance. Users should verify their BusyBox httpd build configurations and avoid non-default compile options that enable this behavior. Default BusyBox builds with shadow password support are not affected.
