Technical Analysis

The rtMedia plugin for WordPress, BuddyPress, and bbPress prior to version 4.7.14 contains an authorization bypass vulnerability (CWE-639). The plugin does not properly verify ownership or write permissions on albums during media uploads. As a result, authenticated users with subscriber-level privileges or above can place media files into private albums owned by other users, causing unauthorized attribution of media content.

Potential Impact

Unauthorized users can upload media to private albums of other users, potentially leading to privacy violations and misattribution of content. This could affect user trust and content integrity within affected WordPress sites using the vulnerable plugin versions.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade the rtMedia plugin to version 4.7.14 or later, where this authorization verification issue is fixed. No other mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor advisory.
