Description

CVE-2026-89088 is a heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability in libparted's file system resizing logic for FAT16 volumes on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. It occurs when resizing a specially crafted FAT16 file system image with malformed directory metadata, leading to memory corruption and application crash, causing denial of service. The vulnerability requires user interaction and local access to trigger.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability involves a heap-based buffer overflow in the libparted library used by Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. Specifically, the flaw exists in the file system resizing logic for FAT16 volumes, where malformed directory metadata in a crafted FAT16 file system image can cause an oversized read into a fixed-size memory buffer. This memory corruption results in an application crash and denial of service. The attack vector requires local access with user interaction to resize the malicious file system image.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation causes memory corruption leading to an application crash and denial of service. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity. The attack requires local access and user interaction, limiting the scope of exploitation.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-89088 for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid resizing FAT16 file system images from untrusted sources.
