Vendor/Project: Red Hat
Product: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10

Description

CVE-2026-89096 is a vulnerability in the nfs-utils package on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. An unauthenticated remote attacker can cause a Denial of Service (DoS) by sending repeated state notification requests to the rpc.statd service. The flaw causes the service to fail to release allocated memory properly, leading to continuous memory growth and eventual resource exhaustion. This can degrade or crash the rpc.statd service, impacting system availability.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability affects the rpc.statd service in nfs-utils on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. The service improperly handles memory allocated during callback processing when receiving state notification requests, failing to release it after its effective lifetime. An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit this by sending repeated requests, causing memory exhaustion and a Denial of Service condition. The CVSS v3.1 score is 5.9 (medium severity) with network attack vector, high attack complexity, no privileges required, no user interaction, unchanged scope, no confidentiality or integrity impact, and high availability impact.

Potential Impact

The impact is a Denial of Service due to memory exhaustion in the rpc.statd service. This can cause the service to degrade or crash, potentially affecting system stability and availability. There is no confidentiality or integrity impact reported.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-89096 for current remediation guidance. Until a patch is available, consider limiting exposure of the rpc.statd service to untrusted networks to reduce risk.
