Vendor/Project: Red Hat
Product: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10

Description

CVE-2026-89098 is a vulnerability in the nfs-utils package on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 where the fsidd daemon improperly handles malformed input on its local domain socket. A local user can cause the daemon to crash by sending a request missing required arguments, resulting in a denial of service for filesystem identifier lookup services until the daemon is restarted.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability exists in the fsidd daemon of nfs-utils on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. The daemon relies on program assertions to validate command arguments received over its local domain socket. If a local user sends a malformed request lacking required arguments, it triggers an assertion failure causing the daemon to crash. This leads to a denial of service affecting filesystem identifier lookup services until the daemon is manually restarted.

Potential Impact

An attacker with local access can cause the fsidd daemon to crash, resulting in denial of service for filesystem identifier lookup services. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity, only availability is affected.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-89098 for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is applied, avoid sending malformed requests to the fsidd daemon. Restarting the daemon restores service after a crash.
