CVE-2026-89301: CWE-862 Missing Authorization in rtcamp rtMedia for WordPress, BuddyPress and bbPress
Description
The rtMedia plugin for WordPress, BuddyPress, and bbPress contains a missing authorization vulnerability in all versions up to and including 4.7.13. This flaw allows unauthenticated attackers to delete arbitrary safe files on the server due to insufficient file path validation. The vulnerability arises because a public nonce (rtmedia_upload_nonce) is exposed in frontend JavaScript on any page rendering the rtMedia gallery or upload shortcode, enabling retrieval by unauthenticated visitors without prior authentication.

Technical Analysis
CVE-2026-89301 is a missing authorization vulnerability (CWE-862) in the rtMedia plugin for WordPress, BuddyPress, and bbPress. The issue exists in the process function where file path validation is insufficient, allowing unauthenticated attackers to delete arbitrary safe files on the server. The public nonce used for upload authorization is exposed in frontend JavaScript on pages rendering the rtMedia gallery or upload shortcode, making it accessible to unauthenticated users. This vulnerability affects all versions up to and including 4.7.13.
Potential Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can delete arbitrary safe files on the server hosting the vulnerable plugin. The confidentiality impact is high due to the ability to manipulate server files, but there is no impact on integrity or availability as per the CVSS vector. This could disrupt normal operations or remove important files, potentially leading to denial of service or other operational issues.
Mitigation Recommendations
No patch or official fix information is provided in the available data. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict access to pages rendering the rtMedia gallery or upload shortcode and monitor for suspicious activity related to file deletions. Avoid exposing the public nonce in frontend JavaScript if possible.
