A fix is available that properly poisons the URB before shutting down the timer to prevent re-arming on freed memory. Users should update to patched kernel versions that include this fix. No additional mitigation is required as the issue is resolved in the updated driver code.
Description
A use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's HID sony driver for Guitar Hero Live dongles was resolved. The flaw occurs during driver unbind when a timer callback re-arms a timer on freed memory, leading to a use-after-free condition. This is caused by improper synchronization and handling of USB request blocks (URBs) and timers during device removal. The issue was reproduced with Kernel Address Sanitizer (KASAN) confirming the use-after-free. The vulnerability affects specific Linux kernel versions including certain 4.15.x, 5.0.x, and 5.3.x builds.
